Back of the Walls

The brief was to redevelop an NCP Surface Car Park, Southampton, into a 450 room Student Halls of Accommodation.

The western boundary of the site borders the historic wall line of the Old Town, giving rise to the road name Back of the Walls. The proposal draws formal and geometric inspiration from the fifteenth century Town Walls and original medieval street pattern.

The proposed building is composed by two ā€˜Lā€ shapes in plan form, creating a staggered building line to both main facades. The division of the building visually reduces the overall mass and allows the creation of an urban landscaped space at the main entrance.

The longest elevations are fragmented to from clusters defined by changes in the refined yet robust pallet of materials. The building heights are strategically arranged between four and six storeys to establish a cohesive building line in keeping with the character of the surrounding context.
