Church Hill

A rooftop extension scheme creating 9 duplex apartments within a regeneration area of North London.

Church Hill is located in the heart of Walthamstow, one of the largest districts in East London and part of the London borough of Waltham Forest. The area is currently under going a major regeneration and growth scheme, with local investments being injected into public spaces, local businesses and high street redevelopments. The rooftop proposal of 9 duplex apartments above an existing residential block is carefully articulated in response to its sensitive context, retaining character and elegance in its strategic massing. The proposal seeks to respond to the existing buildings’ vertical elements with a regular rhythm of setback, producing a more coherent massing and responds subtly to the rigid grid of the existing building. This creates a harmonious yet engaging street scape.

The proposed perforated metal cladding reinforces the sense of a lightweight translucent extension, while responding appropriately to its existing context. The use of flush metal panels and simple window detailing softens the articulated massing, and give the new extension a distinct and contemporary character. The rhythm of the panels has been developed to be at harmony with the existing building, as well as subtly articulate the facade. This restrained palette of high quality materials create a quiet, contemporary piece of architecture which would improve the immediate setting and complement the existing building
