Oak Hill

Client: Private

Location: Hampstead, London

Status: Completed – 2014

New build family home situated on a steep topography.

Set at the foot of an existing Victorian mansion block in a conservation area in Hampstead, North London. This 3 bedroom, single storey lateral family house seeks to celebrate the natural garden setting while preserving the privacy of its immediate neighbours.

These themes are achieved through the inclusion of an intensive green roof with a seating area and wildflower planting to replace the neighbours’ sloping garden. Although the house is in sharp contrast to the neighbouring mansion block, it does not jar. This is due partly to the simple glazed, lateral form itself and partly to the use of diagonal strips of oiled kebony wood which should age in harmony with the house’s surroundings. Privacy is enhanced by the orientation of the house and the widescreen, uninterrupted view of the leafy surroundings through full height, minimally framed glazing. Natural materials and distinct textures unite the outside and inside spaces.
